The T-Mobile G1 sports a large touchscreen display that is similar to that found on the Apple iPhone, though it is slightly larger in size, at 3.17″ across the diagonal, and offers a full 65k HVGA resolution.
But, naturally, high aims alone don’t build a killer phone; there are a lot details to get right, and a lot more that Google and company have seen fit to leave in the hands of developers.
T-Mobile, Google and High Tech Computer unveiled the highly anticipated first Google Android phone in New York on Tuesday.
Set to launch on October 22nd for $179 on T-Mobile in the US on a two-year stint, or $399 contract-free.
The multitasking makes the Android experience very computer-like, but it makes us wonder if Android will be subject to the sort of memory-overload crashes that are common to Windows Mobile.
Despite all this focus on the actual HTC device, it’s the software that really makes or breaks this thing, especially given the fact that Android boasts plenty of hardware and carrier partners that will have their very own devices to run the OS, many of which we can expect by early next year if the G1 isn’t your style, you don’t have long to wait for an alternative.
T-Mobile, HTC and Google stood hand in hand yesterday to debut the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1.
We just got an early hands on with T-Mobile’s G1 Android and yes, it does look as nice as it does in the photos.
The G1 features WiFi and 3G radios, a 3-megapixel camera, and support for the Android Market and Amazon’s mobile MP3 store, giving owners apps and tunes on the go.
You have to admit, it looks almost just like every other HTC phone for the last 3 years, oh wait….
Apple could charge $800 for the iPhone if it was running Linux , but they decided to lock it down and charge $200 so they could sell more… People are so greedy these days.
WiFi is also available for times when more speed is needed.
Released for T-Mobile, the G1 is the first mobile device powered by Google’s open-source Android software.
It felt a bit like a new era for the mobile industry though the rollerblading seemed a tad out of place with high-profile companies backing a Linux-based, touch-driven mobile OS, and spouting the word “open” every two sentences.
The aforementioned Amazon MP3 store is also a huge boon for the T-Mobile G1, as all of the songs on Amazon are DRM-free, and you can buy and download the song directly from the store to the device.
The Google Android applications on board the T-Mobile G1 are by far the coolest feature of the handset, especially Google Maps Street View, which on the T-Mobile G1, allows a person to view a snapshot of an entire street scene at any of several US cities.
